A Jisei is a Japanese death poem, celebrating a life. It is a
genre of poetry that developed in the literary traditions of
Japan, centuries ago.
Jisei purport to offer a reflection or meaningful
observations on life. These poems became associated with the
literate, spiritual, and ruling segments of society, as they were
customarily composed by a poet, warrior, nobleman, or Buddhist
monks. It began in a tradition whereby esteemed elders were called
upon to write Jisei.
